Scouts is the fourth section of Scouting, offering an adventurous programme for boys and girls aged 10½ to 14 years old. Scouts participate in various activities and challenges, from camping and hiking to community service projects and team-building exercises. Scouts are encouraged to participate in these activities and participate in the programme rather than simply meeting set standards. This approach allows Scouts to explore their own abilities, values and personal attitudes.
Through the programme, Scouts work towards badges and awards that recognise their achievements and help them develop new skills, such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving. The Challenges Awards and Activity Badges offer Scouts the opportunity to be recognised for their achievements. Scouts can also participate in national and international events like jamborees and expeditions, which provides them with a unique experience in its own right.
Scouts participate in a balanced programme that helps them discover the world in which they live, encourages them to keep fit and healthy, and develops their creative talents. The programme helps Scouts to learn traditional Scouting skills such as camping, survival and cooking, as well as a wide range of adventurous activities, anything from abseiling to yachting.
Half the Programme is given over to being outdoors, an essential aspect of Scouting. Scouts get the opportunity to experience a range of outdoor activities, which helps them develop their independence, personal responsibility and leadership skills. Additionally, being part of a team and building strong friendships is a core aspect of the Scouts programme.
The international aspect of Scouting gives it a unique appeal, with many Scouts travelling abroad during their time in the Section. In 2007, 40,000 Scouts from around the World attended the World Jamboree in the UK, and Scouts regularly participate in International camps and experiences both on home soil and abroad. This allows Scouts to learn about different cultures, build new friendships and develop their understanding of the world.
Scouting is a fantastic way for young people to continue their personal development and prepare for the challenges and adventures ahead. Through the programme, Scouts learn to take responsibility for themselves and their actions, develop independence, and build strong friendships that last a lifetime. By participating in various activities and challenges, Scouts gain new skills and experiences that will help them become well-rounded and capable adults.
